Comedian turns chanteuse: "SNL's" Ana Gasteyer sings at The Kate

You know Ana Gasteyer best from the characters she's played: on "Saturday Night Live," she was music teacher Bobbie Mohan-Culp, who, with Will Ferrell, turned hip tunes into hilariously square adaptations; she was NPR host Margaret Jo McCullen, who soothingly murmured her way through interviews, even when they were about Schweddy Balls; and she was, well, Martha Stewart.

On the ABC sitcom "Suburgatory," which ran from 2011 to 2014, she portrayed neighbor and PTA president Sheila Shay.

So you know this: Gasteyer is a hilarious comic performer.

You might not know this: She is also a skillful singer.

She's performed on Broadway and in cabarets, and last year, she released "I'm Hip," an album that offers jazz standards and Gasteyer's take on, say, Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats."

On Tuesday, she'll perform some of those "I'm Hip" numbers, with some patter in between, and she frames it as a throwback to the late 1950s and '60s nightclub style of show.

The performance at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrooka will be recorded and broadcast next year as part of The Kate TV series produced by CPTV.

Ana Gasteyer, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $45, $55; 1-877-503-1286.
