Give 'em the old razzle dazzle: "Chicago" at Ivoryton Playhouse

Ivoryton Playhouse is serving up a run of diverse musicals this summer, with "Chicago" now followed by "Rent" in August and then "Man of La Mancha" in September. Why, that could be the very definition of "something for everyone."

But first things first: let's talk "Chicago," which opens Wednesday and continues through July 24.

"Chicago" debuted on Broadway in 1975, inspired by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins' 1926 play with characters she based on actual criminals. But it was the 1996 revival of "Chicago" that cemented the show as a major hit and an iconic reflection of tabloid culture and the idea of the "celebrity criminal."

And, of course, "Chicago" then went on to became a 2002 movie that earned an Oscar for Best Picture.

Starring in the Ivoryton production are the husband-and-wife team of Christopher Sutton and Lynn Philistine; he plays Billy Flynn, and she plays Roxie Hart. The cast also boasts Sheniqua Trotman as Mama Morton, Stacey Harris as Velma Kelly, Z. Spiegel as Mary Sunshine and Ian Shain as Amos Hart. Todd Underwood directs and choreographs.

    "Chicago," Ivoryton Playhouse, 103 Main St., Ivoryton; opens June 29 and runs through July 24; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Wed., 7:30 p.m. Thurs., 8 p.m. Fri. and Sat., 2 p.m. Sun.; $50 adults, $45 seniors, $22 students, $17 children; (860) 767-7318.
