Once more unto the beach: Shakespeare on the Beach in Stonington

Sure, you've heard of Shakespeare in the Park, but how about Shakespeare on the Beach? The latter is just what they're offering this weekend in Stonington Borough.

This is the second year that the Stonington Community Center and The Glass Eye are presenting a work by the Bard on the borough's duBois Beach.

The Glass Eye is a production company based in New York City and led by Kyle Metzger, who grew up in Stonington and frequented the Stonington Community Center.

Metzger is giving "Twelfth Night" a different spin here. He's setting it during the 1930s in a New England seaside town (perfect for performances in Stonington, no?). They're saying this version "hearkens back to the era of musical comedy, a la Cole Porter's 'Anything Goes.'" It boasts music by Tim Duncheon that recalls the jazz age and costumes by Rivkah Spolin that have a nautical flair.

The production benefits The Glass Eye and the Stonington Community Center.

Shakespeare on the Beach, 6 p.m. Sat. and Sun., duBois Beach, Stonington Borough; suggested donation $10 for individuals, $20 for families; (860) 535-2476.
