    Musical Masterworks opens new season

    Tara Hellen O'Connor (Contributed)

It's hard to believe it's been seven years since Charles Wadsworth, founding artistic director of the Musical Masterworks chamber music series in Old Lyme, stepped down. It was probably an anxious time because, frankly, Wadsworth was a legend.

Now, though, in his seventh season, Masterworks artistic director/resident cellist Edward Arron is hopefully comfortable in his status as The Replacement. It was a smooth transition, and Arron has only continued the organization's success through his visionary fusion of exhilarating programs and a roster of amazing guest artists.

The first presentations of the 2016-17 campaign take place Saturday and Sunday, as always, in the First Congregational Church — with its superb acoustics and sight-lines. Aaron will be joined by flutist Tara Helen O'Connor and pianist Adam Neiman for performances of Bach's Sonata in E-flat Major; Chopin's Ballad No. 2 in F Major, Opus 38; Gaubert's Trois Aquarelles; Debussy's Syrinx; and Weber's Trio in G minor, Opus 63.

Musical Masterworks, 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, 2 Ferry Road, Old Lyme; $35, $5 for students under 23 with ID; (860) 434-2252, musicalmasterworks.org.
