‘Live Lunch Break’ Flashback - Nathan Allen
It was perhaps the most distinctive “Live Lunch Break” performance since The Day started our weekly concert series back during the Korean War. Broadcasting from inside the Hygienic Art Galleries — yes, it was snowing outside! — we hosted Gales Ferry singer-songwriter Nathan Allen. His tunes meandered cleverly rather than following conventional verse/chorus/bridge structures, and he used a loop pedal to layer percussive effects over chordal and arpeggiated guitar parts. Lyrically and melodically, Allen’s efforts drew from hip-hop, folk-punk, spoken word, poetry slam and even musical theater. Sonic touchstones ranged from the Dead Milkmen to the Residents, and here’s hoping Allen finds his way into some of our local and regional open mic nights. As always, we archive all of our LLB presentations, so if you missed the show, you can find it at theday.com/livelunch.
