Classic Albums Live performs Prince at the Garde
In the expanding universe of "classic album" replications — both as casual one-off exercises in local clubs and as an actual global industry — there seems to be an accepted list of what constitutes "classic."
My problem is that my opinion on what any given artist's "classic" album is often doesn't match popular opinion. Consider Prince. Of the seven billion people in the world, 697,432,888 believe "Purple Rain" is his finest achievement. Me? I actually like "Controversy" and "1999" and "Sign o' the Times" better.
This is why no one from the superb "Classic Albums Live" outfit — an organization that assembles bands to recreate albums note-for-note, cut-by-cut — has asked me what I think. No worries. I heartily recommend their product and, Thursday in the Garde Arts Center, you can experience their presentation of Prince's "Purple Rain." Bonus: after they've finished the whole album, you'll get a second set of Prince hits from across his career.
Classic Albums Live: "Purple Rain," 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $28-$38; (860) 444-7373.
