The roaring (and dancing) ’20s: "Thoroughly Modern Millie" at Goodspeed

The season begins at the Goodspeed Opera House with "Throughly Modern Millie," in which a young woman finds fun — and trouble — when she moves to New York City in the 1920s.

"Millie" features music by Jeanine Tesori, who recently won a Tony for her work in "Fun Home." Dick Scanlan wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book with Richard Morris, whose 1967 movie provided the basis for this 2002 musical. (That movie, in turn, was based on the 1956 British musical "Chrysanthemum.")

A quick sketch of the show's storyline: Millie comes to the Big Apple with the idea of marrying someone for money, but then she discovers true love. In the meantime, she revels in the whole flapper scene but gets into some scrapes thanks to a nefarious landlady and a renegade heiress.

The Goodspeed production stars Taylor Quick as Millie. It’s directed and choreographed by Denis Jones, who choreographed Goodspeed’s “Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn” and the Terris Theatre production of “Band Geeks!”

“Thoroughly Modern Millie,” Goodspeed Opera House, 6 Main St., East Haddam; opens Friday and runs through July 2; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Wed., 7:30 p.m. Thurs., 8 p.m. Fri., 3 and 8 p.m. Sat., and 2 p.m. Sun.; also performances at 2 p.m. on select Thursdays and 6:30 p.m. on select Sundays; tickets start at $29; (860) 873-8668.
