Whiffenpoofs perform Wednesday at The Kate.

    Yale Whippenpoofs (Contributed)

Moving to New England 20 years ago, I was bewildered and a bit intimidated by many things — not the least of which was the idea of Ivy League schools in close proximity and the fact that they actually had famous a cappella singing groups.

The Penn Chord On Blues. The Dartmouth Aires. Harvard's Krokodiloes. The Princeton Roaring 20. Cornell's Absolute A Cappella. Columbia's Notes and Keys. The Brown Jabberwocks.

Methink you'd have to get admitted to the Ivy League just to come up with names like that.

Of course, Yale's Whiffenpoofs are probably the best-known of all these elite outfits. Comprised of 14 seniors, the Whiffenpoofs tour extensively, performing a vast repertoire of material and not worrying about studying because, after all, they're Ivy Leaguers. See them gloriously sing Wednesday at The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook.

The Yale Whiffenpoofs, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $32; 1-877-503-1286.
