John Legend postpones Friday show at Foxwoods

Editor's note: John Legend has postponed his Friday concert at Foxwoods to July 27.

As John Legend tours his newest album, "Darkness and Light," it is important to remember the trajectory of this artist’s catalog.

This is exactly the approach that Blake Mills took when he was asked to produce Legend’s ninth album. As he explained to Billboard, “There was this hole in John’s material that I felt like a huge part of his personality could come through.”

The substance of the album, the material that filled that hole, includes Legend’s awareness of social justice issues, coupled with his reflections on his marriage to model Chrissy Teigen and his relationship with their daughter, Luna.

You could say that this album is largely autobiographical, truer to the artist's interests. It is made immediately clear to the listener that this work is uncharacteristic among Legend's repertoire. The first line of "I Know Better," the first song on "Darkness and Light," offers a thesis statement for the rest of the album, "They say sing what you know / But I've sung what they want." In other words, this new album is John Legend's voice, not only his beautifully strong and controlled singing voice, but it is also his voice as an artist — his conscience as a human being.

For that reason, this "Darkness and Light" tour might be his most important to see in person — to be able to say that you were there when Legend’s artistry transformed.

John Legend, 8 p.m. Friday; Foxwoods’ Grand Theater; $75-$175; 1-800-200-2882.
