A king in peril: Flock Theatre stages "Richard II"

Flock Theatre has staged many Shakespeare works over the years, but here is a first: the New London-based troupe will perform “Richard II.”

The production will run this weekend and next in the Connecticut College Arboretum, along with a Wednesday show at Mystic Seaport. It stars Michael Hinton as the title character, Madeleine Dauer as Queen Isabel, Josh Marcks as Lord Aumerle, and Bill Steinmayer as the Duke of York. Flock Artistic Director Derron Wood directs the drama.

“Richard II” is one of Shakespeare’s history plays involving the War of the Roses, and the story follows that of “Edward III,” which Flock presented last year.

At the start of this play, Richard rules on an argument between two characters — one of whom is Richard’s cousin, Bolingbroke, who will eventually seize the throne from Richard II. At issue is murder and the misuse of money. Richard rules that the conflict should be decided by battle between the two men. Just as the duel is about to start, Richard changes his mind and decides to banish them instead but waivers on the amount of time. That’s just the beginning of Richard’s troubles.

Flock says that “Richard II” “poses the timeless question: What are we when the only role we’ve ever played is suddenly stripped from us?"

“Richard II,” Connecticut College Arboretum, Williams Street, New London; opens tonight and runs through Aug. 27; 7 p.m. Thurs.-Sun.; $15 adults, $12 students, seniors, and active military; (860) 443-3119, flocktheatre@hotmail.com; also will be performed at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mystic Seaport McGraw Quadrangle, 75 Greenmanville Ave., as part of the Arts on the Quad series; $18 members, $20 nonmembers, free for children 3 and younger; (860) 572-0711.
