Fire away: Flock hosts The Burning of Benedict Arnold in NL

The Burning of Benedict Arnold Festival (A. Vincent Scarano)

Benedict Arnold would be doing a slow burn, you might say, if he knew New Londoners were lighting him up in effigy more than 200 years after he led the British effort to set the Whaling City ablaze.

That fine, fiery tradition began after the Sept. 6, 1781 burning of New London, and Flock Theatre revived the effigy custom five years ago.

This year's Burning of Benedict Arnold takes place on Saturday, and it promises the March of the Traitor, where participants walk down Bank Street, ending at Waterfront Park. There, folks can listen to the music of Marvelous Liars and Cankickers, buy food provided by Dev’s on Bank and sip beer.

Oh, and, yes, they can watch as ol’ Benedict goes up in flames at 8 p.m.

The Burning of Benedict Arnold, Saturday, downtown New London; parade starts at Shaw Mansion at 6 p.m. and travels down Bank Streeet; gathering at Waterfront Park starts at 6:30; Cankickers at 6:30, Marvelous Liars at 8, and Burning of Benedict Arnold at 8; free; (860) 443-3119.
