Eastern Connecticut Symphony kicks off new season Saturday in the Garde
Revolution is in the air! Musically speaking, that is.
The esteemed Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2017-18 season Saturday with a progam titled "Revolutionaries." Under the direction of music director/conductor Toshi Shimada, and featuring soloist/pianist Mark Markham, an endorsee of the stellar Steinway piano manufacturer, the ECSO takes the stage as always in New London's Garde Arts Center.
As for revolution, Saturday's program will feature Richard Wagner's Overture to Tannhäuser, a piece that impacted opera through his "total work of art" philosophy; Prokoviev's Piano Concerto No. 3, which was groundbreaking in its utilization of both the soloist and the orchestra; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major — "Eroica" — dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and a composition that pushed that parameters of the Classical era towards the Romantic period.
A pre-concert chat takes place at 7 p.m. For more information on the upcoming ECSO season, see a Friday feature in Daybreak.
