Old Dominion hits Sun Arena stage on Friday

    Old Dominion (www.weareolddominion.com)

Nashville band Old Dominion surfaced in 2014 and, within three years, rode their "Meat and Candy" and "Happy Endings" albums like race horses to chart-topping success. The thing is, lead singer/songwriter Matt Ramsey and guitarist/songwriter Trevor Rosen are both in their early 40s — thereby qualifying in the always-hilarious "overnight sensation" sweepstakes.

In fact, the pair have been working in Nashville since the dawn of the new century, slowly carving out stellar reps as tunesmiths for established artists like Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Sam Hunt, The Band Perry and Joan Osborne.

For Old Dominion, they assembled veteran players and have refined the glossed-harmony, pop-leaning sound established years ago by Alabama and carried on by Rascal Flatts. This is not to suggest OD doesn't have their own distinctive ID and a batch of great songs — the latest of which is a wonderful, just-out single called "Make It Sweet." The band headlines Friday in the Mohegan Sun Arena, and it ought to be a hit-fest.

Old Dominion, 8 p.m. Friday, Mohegan Sun Arena; also, Jordan Davis and Morgan Evans; $39.50-$69.50; 1-800-745-3000.
