CD tip: "Brothers Keeper" by the Neville Brothers

    CD tip

    "Brother's Keeper"

    The Neville Brothers

When saxophonist Charles Neville died last year, it was sad and in a way frightening to realize it was no longer possible to see the Neville Brothers live. That's cruel. Now, I just heard that Art Neville — Papa Funk, the family patriarch as well as the band's organist and the gentleman holding down that baritone voice on those lustrous harmonies — has also passed away. If I had a room with a pair of angled mirrors, three of Me could argue over which album would resonate as the most representative of his life and and art. "'Yellow Moon' by the Nevilles," Rick the First would say. "'Look-ka Py Py' by the Meters," another Rick would say. But wait: I've already plugged in the Nevilles' "Brother's Keeper." Quand bon Dieu vie' ou li prend.
