Town: Old Lyme
Directions: From I-95 north, take Exit 71 to right on Fourmile River Road; from I-95 south, take Exit 71 to left on Fourmile River Road; right onto Route 156 west (north), go about 2.5 miles to left onto Buttonball Road, left at fork, right at sign for White Sands Beach. Follow to end and bear right to parking lot.
Where to Park: Access to Griswold Point is from White Sands, a town beach. Non-residents can park in lot other than Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Description: From White Sands to the end of Griswold Point is just over a mile, easy walk mostly along the beach. Walk along the beach til path turns onto a right-of-way across a field. Sign for entrance to Griswold Point, a 25-acre site, is at end of field.
Regulations: Nesting areas for plovers and terns are roped off during nesting season, from end of March through Labor Day. No dogs during nesting seasons; other times dogs are permitted but must be leashed at all times.
Natural Features: Spectacular views of the mouth of the Connecticut River across to Saybrook Point Lighthouse. Favorite spot for viewing shorebirds. Important nesting area for terns and plovers.
Good to know: Foot access only Labor Day through beginning of nesting season at the end of March.
