7th Graders Experience Witch of Blackbird Pond!

Jim Storms of Essex and founder of the TCS Wethersfield Bike Trip catches up with brother, Peter Storms, of Wethersfield while 7th Graders look on.

MADISON, CT - Seventh Graders at The Country School (TCS) recently rode their bicycles through historic Wethersfield, visiting some of the sites described in The Witch of Blackbird Pond, the historical fiction novel they are studying in English class. Master teacher and advisor, Willa Ridinger, has been a member of the 7th Grade teaching team for the past 5 years.

During their tour, students pedaled through meadows and streets featured in Elizabeth George Spear’s Newbury Medal-winning novel, stopping at houses and other destinations described by the author. Ms. Ridinger notes “While some schools use virtual tours, we encourage our students to experience the setting imagined by this Connecticut author first hand. Students easily make cross curriculum connections, which enhances their appreciation of history as well as English, as they relive much of the past described in the novel.”

This was just one of more than a dozen trips taken by students at the Preschool-8th Grade independent school in the weeks since the school year began. Other adventures have included a four day, three night canoe trip on the Delaware Water Gap for 8th Graders; an overnight orienteering trip in New York state for 7th Graders; a camping and hiking overnight in Kent, CT, for 6th Graders; and trips to museums, nature centers, and other areas of interest for students of all ages.

Founded in 1955, The Country School’s 23 acre campus in Madison, CT serves 250 students from more than 20 different shoreline communities. At TCS, the traditional academic disciplines are balanced by rich offerings in the Arts, athletics, community service, and outdoor education. The Country School provides an education that lasts a lifetime and prepares graduates to go on to many high schools including Choate, Hopkins, Ethel Walker, Fairfield Prep, Hotchkiss, Pomfret School, Suffield Academy, Westminster, Williams, and more.
