UPDATED: Death reported from East Lyme morning crash
An Amherst, Mass., resident died this afternoon due to injuries sustained during a crash on Interstate 95 northbound between exits 75 and 76 in East Lyme early this morning.
Robert Clifford, 25, was a passenger in a 2000 Chevrolet Prism that hit a tractor-trailer truck in the breakdown lane of the highway, state police said. He was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, and was listed in critical condition for much of the day. Hospital officials said Clifford died this afternoon.
The car was driven by Lisa Grzywacz, 19, of Seymour. She was also taken to L&M. She was listed in stable condition for much of the day and released Thursday afternoon.
The crash resulted in the closure of one lane of the highway for more than five hours, state police said. The driver of the tractor trailer, Lafayette Murray, 63, of Elizabeth, N.J., was not injured, police said.
The accident happened at about 4:20 a.m. near where Interstate 395 splits off from the highway. After the crash, traffic on the northbound side was backed up as far as exit 70 in Old Lyme, police said. Both lanes of the highway reopened at about 9:30 a.m.
The accident is under investigation.
