It took until the outcome of Saturday night’s game between St. John’s and Rutgers to determine the final few seeds for the Big East tournament.

With Rutgers winning, defending tournament champion UConn became the ninth seed.

For the second straight year, UConn (18-12) plays DePaul (12-18) in the tournament opener on Tuesday, starting at noon at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Huskies won last year, 97-71, to start their magical run of five wins in five days.

UConn won the regular season meeting, 80-54, on Feb. 15 in Storrs.

The winner faces No. 8 West Virginia at noon on Wednesday.

Other first round games on Tuesday: No. 12 St. John’s vs. No. 13 Pittsburgh (2 p.m.), No. 10 Seton Hall vs. No. 15 Providence (7 p.m.) and No. 11 Rutgers vs. No. 14 Villanova (9 p.m.).

No. 5 Georgetown, No. 6 South Florida, No. 7 Louisville and West Virginia received first round byes and open play Wednesday.

Regular season champion Syracuse is the top seed, earning one of four double byes along with Marquette, Notre Dame and Cincinnati.

This is the 30th anniversary of the Big East tournament.

Should be another entertaining week at Madision Square Garden.
