New London — No one was hurt early this evening when a piece of decorative façade fell from the face of a three-story building at 54 State St. and shattered on the sidewalk.

Police reported the incident to city firefighters, who blocked off access to State Street between Bank Street and Eugene O’Neill Drive shortly after 6 p.m.

The piece that fell was located near the top of the right-hand side of the building’s face. It appeared to be strictly decorative and was not supporting any weight, Acting Battalion Chief Mark Waters said.

Firefighters were waiting for the city building inspector to arrive.

The building houses the Pinc! Boutique and Surprise Party Goods.
