Old Lyme — The Lyme-Old Lyme Science Olympiad team won first place in the state championship in Farmington on Saturday.

The team, made up of students in sixth through ninth grade, is headed to the national championship, to be held May 18 and May 19 in Orlando, Fla.

Science teachers Shannon Glorioso and Lucy Walter started the after-school club six years ago to share their passion and love for science with like-minded students. They have competed in Science Olympiad for the past five years and earned third place in the state competition for the past three years.

Students and coaches began preparing for the 2012 state championship in October, meeting two to three times a week after school.

The team is looking for sponsors to help pay for the trip to the national competition. To donate, contact Walter at lwalter@region18.org or Glorioso at sglorioso@region18.org.
