Preserving Long Island Sound is focus of April 20 forum

New London — The Coast Guard Academy Sustainability Club and New London County Environmental Educators Coalition will sponsor, “Sound Communities — A Sustainability Forum” at 7 p.m. April 20 in Leamy Hall at the Coast Guard Academy.

State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Deputy Commissioner Susan Frechette will deliver the keynote address on environmental issues affecting Long Island Sound. Panelists will speak about the efforts, opportunities and challenges when protecting and preserving the Sound.

Panelists will include: Judy Preston of Connecticut Sea Grant; Penny Vlahos, assistant professor of marine sciences at the University of Connecticut; David Bingham of the League of Conservation Voters; and Thomas Granito of the Coast Guard.

High school students who participated Quahog Bowl, a marine science competition, will be recognized.

Admission is free.
