Man Gets Federal Prison Time for Illegal Firearm Possession

David B. Fein, United States attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that John Iannucci, 41, of Branford, was sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Ellen Bree Burns in New Haven to 30 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on May 4, 2011, Iannucci arranged to sell a sawed-off Mossberg 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun to an individual working with law enforcement in exchange for $200.  Prior to May 2011, Iannucci had sustained multiple felony convictions.

It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

On Jan. 19, 2012, Iannucci pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Iannucci has been detained since his arrest on May 4, 2011.

This case was investigated by the Branford Police Department and the FBI’s JTTF, with substantial assistance provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marc H. Silverman.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun and gang violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents of Connecticut’s cities. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
