Norwich — A fire that began on the third floor of a three-story home at 135 W. Thames St. left the home partially damaged, but all seven residents and pets who live there evacuated safely.

Fire Chief Ken Scandariato said the fire began shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday and was under control within about 35 minutes. Damage was mostly contained to the third floor, and it appears the house can be repaired, he said.

The city fire marshal and building inspector were at the scene Tuesday morning investigating the cause.

"This was an excellent stop," Scandariato said.

The 112-year-old balloon frame cape has been owned by Jack Tomlin since 2000, according to the city assessor's records. Jack Tomlin Jr., the owner's son, said he and three other adults, three children and several pets live in the house.

"I was at work, and I had to rush home when I got the call," he said. "I don't know what happened."

Tomlin said he and the other residents of the house would be staying with friends. The American Red Cross was at the scene to assist the residents.

Tomlin said his father is currently out of the country.
