Regarding David Collins' July 4 column, "Mystic is on the Mend," I have a suggestion about the issue of fining the contractor.
I think the company should be fined, but with the understanding that the money will be put toward an advertising campaign to publicize the "new, improved" Mystic. Let people know, especially those who have visited in recent months, that most everything is done with the streetscape project.
I believe the advertising should be throughout New England and the New York area, perhaps some TV spots and certainly print media. An added touch, paid via the fine, would be coupons for local businesses for savings or discounts. And, by the way, even the local residents could use this support after living with this mess for so long.
One final thought about the fine. How far behind would they be if last winter had been a "normal" one?
