East Lyme – Niantic firefighters quickly extinguished a fire early Friday morning at Scotti's Farm Stand on Black Point Road.

Fire Marshal Dick Morris said there was an attempt to steal produce from the stand, during which a towel was placed on a light fixture. The heat from the light caused the towel and the canopy to catch on fire, he said.

A passerby called in the fire around 2:12 a.m.

Morris said the fire was quickly extinguished and limited to the canopy.

Police arrested Cassia Morris, 22, of 62 Vivian St., Waterford, in connection with the incident. She will be arraigned Aug. 3 in New London Superior Court on conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny.

Flanders Fire Department, town and state police and Morris responded to the scene.
