Vladimir Shptalnik Shares Watercolor Expertise

The Madison Art Society hosts a watercolor demonstration by Vladimir Shptalnik on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 6:30 p.m. on the top floor of Memorial Town Hall on the Madison Green. The demonstrations are open to the public. A nominal donation to offset costs is appreciated.

Shpitalnik's watercolor and oil paintings have been exhibited in shows throughout Connecticut and New York as well as in Russia, the Czech Republic, and Japan. Set and costume designer, painter, and illustrator, his work has been seen across the United States, Europe, and in Asia. He is a faculty member at Paier School of Art and Southern Connecticut State University. Professional memberships include the Society of Illustrators, United Scenic Artists, and ASSITEJ. Shpitalnik holds MFA degrees from the Yale School of Drama and the Moscow Art Theatre School and a B.A. (equivalent) from the Abramtsevskoe Art School in Russia. In 1997, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts/Theatre Communications Group's Designer Fellowship.

His book illustration credits include three children's books for Random House/Knopf, as well as commercial illustrations for First USA Visa card's Yale University series. As an architectural illustrator, Shpitalnik has collaborated on numerous projects with Kevin Roche and colleagues at Roche, Dinkeloo and Associates.

Shptalnik's Off-Broadway theatrical credits include set design for Coming Through and Offerings at American Place Theatre and set and costume design for First Snow/Egorushka at SoHo Rep. Other regional dance and theater credits include set and costume design for the Joffrey Ballet, Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, Stage One Theatre, New Harmony Theatre, Lyman Center for the Performing Arts, Seacoast Rep, Voice and Vision Theatre, Yale Cabaret, Yale School of Drama, New Haven Ballet, and the Chancel Opera Company. International credits include the Moscow Art Theatre Studio, Kazan Theater for Youth, Yermolova Theater, and Gorky Cinema Studio. Shpitalnik has served as art director for two independent films.

Each year, Shpitalnik's environmental art adorns the New Haven Green in Connecticut as part of the city's International Festival of Arts & Ideas. He has created interior designs for some of Connecticut's best-known entertainment centers, including The Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, the Meadows Music Theatre in Hartford, and the Madison Art Cinemas. He serves as resident designer for the Oakdale Theatre and the Meadows Theatre.
