Herman owned the Shu-Fix on Main Street until redevelopment of that area, and then worked at Electric Boat, until retirement. Lucille was a homemaker and drove a school bus for Monroe's in Waterford for 26 years.

They raised six children, Ronald and wife, Betty, of Philadelphia, Miss., Claire Peters of San Antonio, Texas, widow of Col. Donald Peters of New London, Monte DiPalma of New London, Lu Tinnel and husband, Bill, of Oakdale, and Linda DiPalma (Otto's Barber On Bank) of New London. They have 13 grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Son, Robert "Bobby" DiPalma and a grandchild are deceased.

They celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary with a special Mass in their home with their children and most recently with a larger family Mass and picnic at the Elks Club in Groton. Monte also just celebrated his 98th birthday on July 1.

They reside on Lincoln Avenue in New London.
