Waterford -- Firefighters from several local departments quickly extinguished a fire in the rear of a home at 520 Boston Post Road Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 4:18 p.m., and crews from Oswegatchie, Jordan Village and Cohanzie departments were on the scene within 10 minutes, said Tim Sullivan, chief of the Jordan Village department. Crews from Waterford East Lyme, Goshen and Quaker Hill departments also assisted. The fire was out by 5 p.m.

The New London Fire Department was also at the scene and sent an ambulance to respond to a car accident on Route 85 as Waterford crews were responding to the fire. There were no serious injuries in the accident, New London fire officials said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but two dogs were found dead in the home. A third dog was rescued by firefighters.

According to town assessor's records, the home is a 1,410-square-foot, three-bedroom ranch built in 1960. It is near the Golden Spur section of the Niantic River.

Waterford Fire Marshal Peter Schlink was on the scene around 9 p.m. Friday and said the department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
