Groton - Reports of a suspicious item resembling a pipe bomb prompted evacuation of Eastern Point Beach Sunday morning and led to response by city police, fire and ambulance, along with the state police bomb squad.

First reported at 10:24 a.m., the suspicious item was later determined to be non-explosive, city police said in a written statement. Eastern Point Beach was reopened later in the day Sunday.
