Groton – With his fourth child on the way Thursday morning, Yeoman First Class Joseph Brickhouse helped his wife to their car so they could drive to the hospital.

The couple didn’t get very far.

Three minutes after his wife’s water broke, Brickhouse delivered the couple’s 8-pound, 7-ounce son, Joel, in the front seat of their 2000 Lincoln LS around 6 a.m. Thursday. They didn’t have time to leave the driveway.

"I quickly brought her to the car thinking I had time to get her safely to the hospital, but my son wasn't going to wait," Brickhouse said in a press release.

Brickhouse, who serves in Submarine Group 2, called 911 after the birth. An ambulance arrived and took the couple and the healthy baby boy to the hospital.

"The doctors were making all sort of jokes, all in good fun and one even told me that I could add something new to my resume," said Brickhouse, who is also an ordained minister. "This was an amazing experience to go through."
