Most folks don't really need a reason to "celebrate" vodka. Its versatility, smoothness and low-ish calorie count (64 calories per 1.5 ounces) make it the favorite of many a mixologist.

Still, my heritage demands that I tell the world this: Thursday, Oct. 4, is National Vodka Day. In honor of this storied spirit, which was first produced in Poland in the 8th century, I offer a cocktail suggestion for your impending celebration.

MOSCOW MULE

1 1/2 ounces vodka

1 ounce ginger beer

1/2 ounce cranberry juice

1/2 ounce fresh lime juice

Orange bitters

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

Add vodka, cranberry juice, fresh lime juice and orange bitters and shake vigorously.

Strain into a highball glass filled with ice and top with ginger beer.

We need the SATs. It's the only fair way to compare apples to apples when it comes to students from different school systems.

Colleges should consider SAT scores but not put too much emphasis on them.

The SATs are a scam. Schools emphasize this test because it looks good for them to accept applicants with high scores, but the approach does not serve students at all.
