Most folks don't really need a reason to "celebrate" vodka. Its versatility, smoothness and low-ish calorie count (64 calories per 1.5 ounces) make it the favorite of many a mixologist.
Still, my heritage demands that I tell the world this: Thursday, Oct. 4, is National Vodka Day. In honor of this storied spirit, which was first produced in Poland in the 8th century, I offer a cocktail suggestion for your impending celebration.
MOSCOW MULE
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1 ounce ginger beer
1/2 ounce cranberry juice
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
Orange bitters
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Add vodka, cranberry juice, fresh lime juice and orange bitters and shake vigorously.
Strain into a highball glass filled with ice and top with ginger beer.
