New London — An apartment building at 184 Pequot Ave. was briefly evacuated this morning as firefighters investigated a report of smoke coming from the basement.
Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said the smoke was coming from a room in the basement that houses elevator equipment. The incident was reported at 7 a.m.
A piece of equipment that runs the elevator was smoking. The smoke caused fire alarms in the building to go off. Firefighters were able to secure the machinery and clear the smoke from the building, he said.
Nichols said Pequot Avenue between School Street and Converse Place was closed as firefighters investigated.
The incident was under control within a half hour. The elevator was shut down until it is repaired.
No injuries were reported.
