Local roundup: Coast Guard men rout Mass Maritime in soccer

New London - Kyle Grell had a goal and an assist to lead the Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime on Tuesday.

Grell's goal came just 2:43 into the match and the Bears (5-3) were never challenged in winning for the third time in four games.

John Tarzian, Robert Copeland and Matt Epperly also scored for Coast Guard.

In another game:

• All-American Carlos Alvarez set up both goals as No. 2 UConn defeated Yale in New Haven, 2-0. Allando Matheson scored in the 37th minute and Mamadou Doudou Diouf in the 56th minute for the Huskies (8-0-1). Yale is 3-4-2.

College volleyball

• Connecticut College extended its winning streak to five with a 3-1 victory against Eastern Connecticut State University at Luce Field House. The Camels (10-1), ranked fourth in New England, won 25-19, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-10. Caroline Martin had 14 kills and 14 digs for Conn.

• Coast Guard won the first game but dropped the next three, losing to MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Game scores were 25-27, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-18. Senior Keriann Mason had 10 kills and senior Karen Matic added 19 assists for the Bears (8-6, 2-2).

H.S. volleyball

• Bailey Spellman had 15 assists, four aces and three kills as Norwich Tech beat Vinal Tech of Middletown 25-17, 25-9, 25-14 in a Constitution State Conference East match. Kobi Favreau had four kills and four aces for Norwich Tech (6-1, 5-0) and Morgan Deschamps added four aces.

H.S. field hockey

• Alice Navaro, Paige Schneider and Caroline Reagan scored for East Lyme as it beat NFA, 3-1, in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. East Lyme is 3-2-2, 2-1-1. Ellen Popinchalk scored for the Wildcats (2-2, 1-2) and Becca Arpin added nine saves.

• Libby Morrison had three goals as Stonington beat Killingly, 3-1, in the ECC. Annie Knizeski had three saves for Stonington (4-1, 4-0).

• Annie Edwards, Bailey Mahler and Paige Vinson scored as Fitch won its first game of the season, 3-0 over Windham in the ECC. Fitch is 1-4, 1-1.

• Fitch announced its Friday game against Waterford at the Mystic Educational Center (4 p.m.) will be its annual "Player for the Cure" game. All proceeds from the game will be donated to help fight cancer. There will be raffle baskets and refreshments.

H.S. swimming

• East Lyme's Caroline Gonsalves broke her own school record in the diving competition as the Vikings edged Waterford 89-87 in the ECC. Gonsalves finished with 256.20 points for her six dives, breaking her old mark of 256.00.

Asia Langley won a pair of events (200 freestyle, 500 free) for the Lancers (1-3, 1-2) while Delia Terry (200 IM), Melissa Vaillancourt (50 free), Tori Poole (100 butterfly) and Ugne Kirvelevicius (100 backstroke) were invididual winners for the Vikings (4-1, 3-0).

H.S. boys' cross country

• St. Bernard's Connor Gralton and Ryan Londregan finished 1-2 to lead the Saints to a 24-31 win over Lyman Memorial in the ECC Small Division. Gralton won the race in 17:29 and Londregan finished in 17:52 for the Saints (5-1, 2-0).

• Connor Jackson finished third in 22:36 for Grasso Tech in a 24-35 loss to Putnam. Mac Foster was fourth (22:42) for the Eagles.

H.S. girls' cross country

• St. Bernard's Heather Wallace won individual honors in 22:09 to help the Saints beat Lyman Memorial 23-33 in the ECC Small Division. Kenzie Coughlin added a third for St. Bernard (5-1, 2-0) and Corrie Meehan finished fourth.
