North Dakota sailors helps paint Ledge Light

Groton — Fifteen sailors assigned to the North Dakota, a Virginia-class submarine under construction, helped paint and renovate New London Ledge Light Sept. 12.

The lighthouse was built in 1909 to help direct vessels entering and departing safely from the harbor. The New London Ledge Lighthouse Foundation maintains the lighthouse and relies heavily on volunteer support.

“This lighthouse often represents the crew’s mental transition from an in-port posture to an at-sea posture. As professional mariners, we take pride in the safety of our ship; this includes all navigational aides,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jeremiah Minner, executive officer of the North Dakota (SSN 784).
