Festivals related to food are all the rage today, with New London going for the BBQ and Mystic celebrating wild mushrooms.

The Best BBQ Chef Competition runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Whaling City's Waterfront Park.The City of New London and the Downtown New London Association are hosting the state of Connecticut's Kansas City Barbeque Society championship. Local restaurants will be doing food demonstrations, and musicians will be performing.

Over in Mystic, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center hold its annual Wild Mushroom festival from 2 to 5 p.m. You can sample dishes from local chefs, listen to bluegrass music, learn about mushrooms during talks, and identify mushrooms on hikes.

Admission is $15, $12.50 for DPNC members; that includes four food tickets and activities. Call (860) 536-1216.
