Stonington police warn of traffic problems Saturday in the borough

Stonington — Police are cautioning drivers and residents to expect traffic congestion and high parking demand in the borough Saturday morning because of several events.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the funeral for former First Selectman James Spellman at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Meanwhile from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Stonington Historical Society expects a large crowd to attend its popular tour of borough homes.

The weekly farmers market will also be going on at the Town Dock in the morning and there is another event at the St. Mary after the funeral.

Police Capt. Jerry Desmond said this morning that he along with additional patrol officers, reserve officers and community service officers will be on duty in the borough to keep traffic moving.

Still, he said, drivers should be aware of the congestion and have patience and courtesy when looking for parking and driving through the narrow borough streets.

He said officers will also be focusing on illegal parking in fire zones and areas that are important to keep open for emergency vehicles.

He said people may have to park outside the borough and walk over the viaduct or footbridge.

Space around the Stonington Community Center soccer fields and thrift shop is typically full on Saturday mornings in the fall because of youth soccer games.
