Mauri resigns as St. Bernard softball coach

Jeff Mauri, who coached the St. Bernard School softball team to two Class S state championship games in the last four seasons, resigned his post this week.

Mauri said he will spend more time with his family - he and his wife have three children ages 7 and under who beginning their own young soccer careers - as well as pursuing some "extra stuff professionally." He said he told his players the day before the state tournament began this spring that it was likely their last few weeks together.

"Of course I'm going to miss it," said Mauri, who teaches physical education at Old Saybrook Middle School. "I've always aspired to be a varsity coach. It took me a long time to get there. It was only four years, but a very successful four years."

The Saints won two Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division titles under Mauri. They reached the Class S state championship game for the first time in program history in 2010, falling to Terryville 2-0. Last season, the Saints (15-10) were the 20th seed in the bracket, but reached the finals against No. 2 Coginchaug of Durham before falling 6-0.

"It was like the New York Giants," Mauri said. We had a mediocre year, but we got hot at the end. They eventually realized how good they were. Their confidence soared through the roof and they ran with it."
