Westerly — Police this afternoon found the body of a 57-year-old man who appeared to have committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. The man's body was found on the beach at Napatree Point.
Police said the man was from Connecticut and died within the last 24 hours from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police and members of the Westerly Ambulance Corps responded to the beach at 1:13 p.m. after someone came across the body and called police.
The body was found several hundred yards east of the beach cabanas. The man's car was located in the Watch Hill parking lot.
Investigators from the Rhode Island Medical Examiner's office are working with Westerly Police detectives on an ongoing investigation of the incident. Police said the name of the man is being withheld as police notify his family members.
