The New London Maritime Society announced today that it has created a new fundraising site for donations toward its bid to purchase Little Gull Island.

It is raising funds at: http://www.indiegogo.com/SaveLittleGull?a=1556000.

Bidding for the one-acre island in eastern Long Island, currently federal property, rose to $371,000 on Monday, and the online auction being run by the General Services Administration will continue at least until today.

The Maritime Society is hoping its GSA will favor its offer to purchase the island for $150,000, despite not being the highest bidder, because it would be considered a good steward of the historic lighthouse and natural areas of the property.
