COLCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — Colchester officials are asking police to investigate arson that destroyed a scarecrow contest display by local Democrats.

The scarecrows were likenesses of state and national Democratic candidates, including President Barack Obama and local Democrats.

The Colchester Business Association partners with the Parks and Recreation Department to hold the annual October scarecrow decorating contest on the town green.

The display was one of about 20 and was the only one vandalized. The town's Board of Selectmen passed a resolution on Thursday condemning the vandalism and calling for an investigation by police.

The Colchester Business Association and local Democratic Town Committee have contributed toward a $750 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Democratic Selectwoman Rosemary Coyle said Democrats plan to rebuild their display on Saturday.
