Get me to the Greek: Tuesday is Election Day, you say? Well, yes, but the truly important event of the day is the start of the Greek Food Festival at St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church in New London. This is the 60th anniversary fest. That longevity lets you know this is one persistently popular event.
Pick one ... or two ... or three: The dishes sold during the festival include lamb shanks, chicken oregano, pastichio, moussaka, gyro sandwich, Greek potatoes, Greek salad, Greek-style green beans, dolmathes, spanakopeta, tiropeta, rice pudding, and Greek pastry. Members of the parish help cook up these delicacies.
A little sip: Greek beverages abound, too, including ouzo and Metaxa.
Once you're full: The church offers guided tours. Festival-goers can see dance exhibitions and participate in a silent auction and raffles.
