Local roundup: Mason leads CGA volleyball into NEWMAC semifinals
New London — Keriann Mason had 21 kills and 26 digs as fourth-seeded Coast Guard beat fifth-seeded WPI Wednesday, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18, in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament.
Coast Guard (18-13) will play at top-seeded Wellesley in Saturday's semifinals (1 p.m.). Wellesley beat the Bears twice this season.
Junior Kelsey DePorto had 13 kills and a match-high four blocks while freshman Maggie Hine had a match-high 42 assists for Coast Guard, which went unbeaten at home (13-0) for the second straight season and won its school-record tying 26th consecutive home match dating back to the 2010 season.
Junior Samantha Marmolejo had 20 digs, senior Karen Matic had 14 digs and six kills, and senior Catherine Walker added eight kills and three blocks for the Bears.
The Engineers finished 19-9.
In another match:
• Marilia Ramos had 34 assists and 12 digs as No. 3 Regis beat No. 6 Mitchell 26-24, 25-19, 22-25, 28-26 in a New England Collegiate Conference first-round match. Nicole Terni had 32 assists and 19 digs for Mitchell (6-16) and Arianna Thomas added 11 kills and 15 digs.
• Marissa Yowell and Hannah Spring scored for No. 3 Elms as it downed No. 6 Mitchell, 2-0, in a NECC first-round game. Kaylee Woodford had 15 saves for Mitchell (4-11).
Coast Guard's Moore honored
• Coast Guard sophomore Holly Moore was named the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after the Bears beat WPI 2-0 for its only conference win of the season in the final game of the year.
Moore, who played in all 16 games this season at forward, made the most of her first collegiate appearance and start in goal, as she made seven saves and registered a shutout filling in for the injured Devin Fellman, who had played every minute of every game this season.
