The women's prison in Niantic is locked down, with limited inmate movement, because of problems with its two generators, according to a Department of Correction spokesman.
The Janet S. York Correctional Institution lost all power for a period of time on Thursday, in part because of the duration of time the facility was using generators, according to the DOC. Prison staff are in the process of making repairs to one of the generators and have taken precautions to keep the facility secure.
"There have been no issues and we do not anticipate any," said the spokesman.
Since Hurricane Sandy left large parts of the shoreline without power, the corrections department has also been using generators to power the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville, Bridgeport Correctional Center and Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown.
