Waterford – A wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 southbound caused a four-car crash Friday evening that sent five to the hospital and snarled traffic for hours.

Traffic patterns have now returned to normal.

Oswegatchie Fire Chief Mark Schenking said one injury was "very serious" and all injured were taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. State police have not confirmed the conditions of anyone involved in the crash.

Schenking said the crash happened just before Exit 81. It appeared a driver had gotten on the exit's off-ramp then headed the wrong way on the highway, he said.

The Cohanzie Fire Department responded as well, Schenking said, and state police were at the scene investigating.
