Four-car crash on I-95 claims life of Stonington man

Waterford - A 72-year-old Stonington man was killed Friday in a head-on crash while having a diabetic emergency and traveling the wrong way on Interstate 95 in Waterford, state police said.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, state police said Manuel Souza, of 315 Elm St., Stonington, was traveling north on the southbound side of I-95. Police said three southbound vehicles encountered Souza's vehicle in the area of exit 81.

Police said a Volvo driven by Adam Nowakowski, 33, of Stonington, sideswiped Souza's vehicle and subsequently crashed into the guardrails on the left shoulder.

A Honda Accord driven by Tsultrim Dorjee, 45, of Old Saybrook, struck Souza's Nissan head-on. Another vehicle, driven by Tammy A. Epstein, 35, of North Stonington, collided with the two crashed vehicles.

All four drivers, along with a 13-year-old passenger in Epstein's vehicle, were taken by Waterford ambulances to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. Souza was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said Souza was believed to have been having a diabetic emergency at the time of the crash.

The other three drivers were treated and released.
