The Connecticut Maritime Commission endorsed the idea of creating a statewide port authority Wednesday.
The commission met in Bridgeport to discuss the state-commissioned study to guide the development of deep water ports in New London, New Haven and Bridgeport. Creating an overarching entity or authority to handle the maritime affairs of the state was one of the study's recommendations.
The authority would try to draw business to the ports and assist established maritime businesses, among other responsibilities, said Joseph A. Riccio Jr., commission chairman. While many details would have to be worked out, he said the commission was "very emphatic and enthusiastic in our support of a statewide port authority."
