Vadas passes 1,000 as Conn beats Mitchell

New London - Matt Vadas scored 23 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as Connecticut College defeated Mitchell College 83-74 on Tuesday night at the Doug Yarnall Athletic Center.

Aaron McBurnie added 22 points and eight rebounds for the Camels (4-5) and Jared Shill had 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Alex Del Rio had a career-high 25 points for the Mariners (5-4), including five 3-pointers., while Joshua Ford added 13 points and Anthony Epps scored 11.

Vadas came into the game 16 points shy of the 1,000-point milestone. He scored Conn's first 10 points, later had a four-point play when he was fouled drilling a 3-pointer, and reached 1,000 when he made a 15-foot jumper shot with 8:33 left in the first half.

In other games:

• Mike Engemann had a game-high 17 points off the bench as Roger Williams held off Coast Guard Academy 49-46. The Bears (1-6), who trailed by as many as 12 in the second half, had a pair of 3-point attempts in the final 12 seconds, but came up short.

Jimmy Knudsen had a season-high 12 points while grabbing six rebounds to lead Coast Guard while Greg Marshall added 10 points and David Anderson had eight points and 13 rebounds.

• St. Thomas More shot 21-of-24 from the foul line and cruised past West Point Prep 86-68. Gabe Levin had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Chancellors while Chris Walters added 13 points and Denzel Gregg had 12 points and six rebounds.

Women's basketball

• Roger Williams rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Connecticut College 68-62. Tara Gabelman had 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Camels (5-5).

Girls' basketball

• Fitch couldn't recover from a slow start and lost to Bacon Academy 57-29 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division. Lexis Foster had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons (1-2, 0-1), who were outscored 26-7 in the first quarter.

• Alyssa Velles scored 22 points as Norwich Free Academy rode a big second quarter to a 46-31 win over New London in the Large Division. The Wildcats (2-1, 1-0) trailed 10-7 after one quarter before outscoring the Whalers 14-2 in the second. Olivia Lane added 10 points for NFA while Lexus Childs-Harris scored 18 points for New London (1-1, 0-1).

• East Lyme survived a scoreless fourth quarter to beat Woodstock Academy 34-26 in the ECC Large Division. The Vikings (2-0, 1-0) led 34-12 after three quarters, but were outscored 14-0 in the fourth. Allison Stoddard led East Lyme with 12 points.

• Ledyard pulled away with a big second quarter and cruised past Plainfield 57-35. The Colonels (3-0) led 13-11 after one quarter before outscoring the Panthers 13-3 in the second quarter. Michelle Klinikowski scored 15 points for Ledyard and Francesca Matira added 11.

• Freshman Taty LaFrance had 19 points and nine steals as Stonington rolled to a 76-34 win over Wheeler. Amanda Roy added 13 points for the Bears (1-2) while Margot Calmar had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Falecia Cabral had 11 points and nine rebounds. Katie Morgan had 10 points for Wheeler (1-2).

• Jamie Hill and Cassidy Bundy scored 16 points each as Montville topped St. Bernard 42-23. Rachael Orbe added 10 rebounds for the Indians (3-0). Kaitlyn Berkel scored 10 points to lead St. Bernard (1-1).

• Hannah Behringer had 13 points, 10 rebounds and two steals in Old Lyme's 35-26 loss to Westbrook. Freshman Sloane Sweitzer added seven points for Old Lyme (1-2).

Boys' basketball

• Norwich Free Academy opens its season tonight by playing host to the Second Annual Honor the Game Tip-off Classic. The event is sponsored by Core Plus. Honor the Game is an initiative developed by the Positive Coaching Alliance that teaches respect for ROOTS - rules, opponents, officials, teammates and self. St. Bernard will play Norwich Tech in the opener at 5:30 p.m. and NFA will host Windham in the second game at 7 p.m.

• New London, a Class LL semifinalist last season, is ranked fifth in the New Haven Register preseason media poll. The Whalers, 24-3 a year ago, received 337 points. Hillhouse is the preseason No. 1 with 18 first-place votes and 568 points. Other local teams receiving votes were Waterford (99), Ledyard (68) and NFA (16).

H.S. riflery

• Grant Buttermore shot a 192 and Ashley Chamberlin had a perfect score in the prone position to lead Grasso Tech to a season-opening 893-55 win over Wilcox Tech. Mark Foster added a 178 while Chamberlin and David Gauthier each shot 175 and Mitchell Pavao shot a 173.
