Gerjuan R. "Callie" Tyus, one of two men charged in November with the 2006 shooting death of Todd "T-Rek" Thomas in New London, has waived his right to an evidentiary hearing and pleaded not guilty to murder.

Tyus entered his plea when he appeared in New London Superior Court this morning with his attorney, Christopher Duby. After discussing the case with his attorney, Tyus confirmed to Judge Susan B. Handy that he was waiving his right to a probable cause hearing. Accused murderers are entitled to such a hearing within 60 days of their arrest. At the hearing, the state would have called witnesses and provided information in an effort convince a judge there is enough evidence to prosecute Tyus.

New London Police, working with the Southeastern Connecticut Cold Case Unit, charged Tyus and Darius Armadore with murdering Thomas on Dec. 22, 2006. He was fatally shot outside Ernie's Café on Bank Street. Both men have extensive criminal records and are being held in lieu of high bonds.

The arrest warrant affidavits detailing the state's case against Tyus and Armadore will remain sealed at least through Feb. 7.

Prosecutor Paul J. Narducci asked the court to keep the affidavits sealed to protect the identities of witnesses. Judge Susan B. Handy granted the request this morning during Tyus' court appearance. Armadore, who is represented by attorney John E. Franckling, is due in court on Wednesday.
