Town rejects Groton Long Point funding request for Irene clean up

Groton – The Town Council on Tuesday rejected a $20,879 request from the Groton Long Point Association to cover costs associated with cleanup in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011.   

The request, according to Groton Long Point President John Tuohy, was for costs not covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for clearing road debris and repairing a retaining wall.

Mayor Heather Bond Somers said the town has the ability to provide services to clear the roads, but instead work was completed by subcontractors hired by Groton Long Point. 

 “We have no way to judge whether your subcontractor is charging way above what it would cost the town,” Somers said. “I think you should give the town the opportunity to do the cleanup work. Maybe we could have helped you out.”
