Branford's two town libraries will be making the most of national Take Your Child to the Library Day, this Saturday, Feb. 2.
Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library (WWML) in Stony Creek and the James Blackstone Memorial Library on Main Street are working in conjunction once again for the annual event, said WWML Children's Librarian Stephanie Carvin.
Celebrated in the U.S. and Canada, Take Your Child to the Library Day was established in 2012. This year in Branford, the fun begins at the Blackstone in the morning, highlighted by an
11 a.m. presentation from the folks of the traveling kids' education program known as "Sciencetellers."
"Sciencetellers will dazzle us with a science-storytelling show called 'Dragons and Dreams,'" said Carvin.
New Jersey-based Sciencetellers' website bills its Dragons & Dreams story adventure as a journey through "fire and ice" suitable for all ages. Kids will be wrapped up in a tale of castles, kings, a dragon keeper, and Ice Sorceress, the Horn of Fire, two villagers, and a "daring journey to save the entire kingdom." The storytellers use science experiments to illustrate their tale-from flash paper to "cool" dry ice and much more. Will dragon's breath appear? You'll have to be there to find out.
After the story, kids are invited to participate in part one of a two-part, dual-building scavenger hunt, said Carvin. Part One takes place at the Blackstone through noon. There will be a Pre-K through Kindergarten hunt and a 1st grade-and-up hunt. Then, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library, "children may complete part two of the scavenger hunt, and receive a prize," said Carvin.
Kids can also enjoy creating fairytale-themed crafts with WWML's own Miss Brigitte.
